Climatology (Prof. Stefan Brönnimann)

The Climatology group, led by SNF-Professor Stefan Brönnimann, works on large-scale climate variability during the past century. Improving the current understanding of 20th century climatic variations (such as the 1930s “Dust Bowl” droughts) is a prerequisite for assessing and predicting current and future climate change. A special focus is on the role of upper-level circulation and troposphere-stratosphere coupling. The main goals are:

• To re-evaluate historical upper-air and total ozone data.
• To create and validate 3-dimensional atmospheric data sets for the first half of the 20th century.
• To study 20th century chemical and climate variability using new data sets and comparison with climate models.

The group closely collaborates with NOAA/CIRES-CDC, Boulder, USA (Gil Compo), NCAR, Boulder, USA (Roy Jenne), RIHMI/WDC, Obninsk, Russia (Alex Sterin) and University of Bern, Switzerland (Jürg Luterbacher).
