The members of this subgroup of the Atmospheric Physics Group investigate cloud processes and life cycles with different models on a large variety of scales (process models, box models, cloud-resolving models and general circulation models). The main focus is on aerosol-cloud interactions and their impact on climate. Aerosol-induced changes in clouds are called indirect aerosol effects. They comprise the largest uncertainty of the anthropogenic radiative forcing since pre-industrial times (IPCC, 2007).
In addition feedbacks between clouds and dynamics are investigated. The overall goal is to obtain better estimates for the impact of clouds and of indirect aerosol effects on the radiative budget of Earth-Atmosphere system in the past, present and future climates.
