The Doppler weather radar of the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science has been installed in 1990 on the campus of the ETH-Hönggerberg. Ever since, it has been used for research and teaching purposes to study precipitation within the range of the radar. During the summer months thunderstorms are monitored on the regular basis. During the winter the C-band radar is used to support the field experiments where the microphysics of snow precipitation is studied. During the long years of operation some extraordinary events could be observed such as a small tornado on July 22, 1995 or the devastating Lothar storm on December 26, 1999.
