The vertically pointing X-band Doppler radar is mounted on a van and is therefore highly mobile. Originally, it was designed to measure thunderstorms with hail but in the later years it was mainly used to study snow precipitation. Recently, the van has been replaced and in the course of these changes the data acquisition system has also been updated. The advantages of the radar are its general good accuracy and its fine resolution in radial (fall) velocity (0.125 m/s) but also in time (1 s) and space (50 m gate spacing).
