Wind Retrieval Scheme

With the help of assimilation techniques, three-dimesional wind fields can be retrieved from the observations of one or multiple Doppler radars.

At the institute the method of Laroche and Zawadzki (1999) is implemented for storm and precipitation analysis as well as for operational real-time purposes.

Retrieved wind fields have been studied both to optimize the methods themselves as well as to learn about storms like Lothar. A series of publications can be found in the publications section of the institute.

A difficulty encountered when processing Doppler velocity data is the aliasing at the so-called Nyquist velocity. At this maximum ambiguously observable radial velocity, values are folded. A dealiasing technique was developed at the institute to correct the problem.
