Animation showing the maximum daily 2-m temperature obtained from 1 July to 31 August 2003 in two different simulations. The coupled simulation (CL, left ) uses a coupled land-surface scheme. The uncoupled integration (UCL, right) employs a prescribed soil moisture evolution which is uncoupled from the atmopheric evolution. The comparison of CL and UCL allows to isolate the contributin of land-atmosphere coupling upon the summer heat wave of 2003. Note especially the occurence of much higher maximum temperatures in CL as compared to UCL (see for instance France) which demonstrates the amplifying effect of land-atmosphere coupling on temperature extremes (see Fischer al. 2007a,b).
