ETH - IACETH - Regional climate processes, modeling and scenarios

One of the key challenges of current global climate change science is to improve our knowledge of aerosol-cloud-climate interactions on the regional scale. In order to cope with the complex aerosol dynamics the regional climate model COSMO-CLM has been coupled to the aerosol module M7 (Vignati et al. 2004) and the two-moment cloud microphysics scheme of Seifert and Beheng (2006). This new model framework allows us to investigate both direct and indirect effects of aerosols over Europe and on climatological timescales. This PhD project is co-supervised by Prof. Ulrike Lohmann.

Fig 1: Modal concept of M7. The scheme consists of a superposition of 7 lognormal modes comprised of the most abundant aerosol species: sulfate, black and organic carbon, sea salt and dust. Internally mixed/soluble and insoluble aerosols are distinguished.
