Retired Adjunct Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences

Additional information

Herbert Lang was director of the section for hydrology at the Institute of Geography (from 1988-1993, he was head of the institute). He was given the title of Professor in 1986. He retired in 1998.

Born on April 21, 1933 in Hundersingen, Germany, Prof. Lang studied physics, geophysics and meteorology at the Universities of Tuebingen, Munich and Innsbruck. In 1961 he completed his doctoral work, in the area of waterbudget and massbalance of glacierized drainage basins, at the University of Innsbruck under Prof. Hoinkes. In 1962-63 he was assistant at the Institute of Photogrammetry at the Technical University of Munich, and in 1964 responsible scientist at the Commission for Glaciology at the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (Glacier Hydrology). At the ETH Zurich since 1965, Prof. Lang was at the Laboratroy for Hydraulics, Hydrology and Glaciology (VAW) until 1983, and has since then been at the Institute of Geography, later Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science. In 1980 he was awarded the venia legendi in hydrology and lecturer in the ETH Department of Earth Sciences.  His research encompassed the measurement, analysis, and modeling of hydrological processes in Alpine regions, as well as the the effects of climate change on the hydrological cycle and on water resources, and on the linking of hydrological and atmospheric models.

In context with a number of engagements in international scientific works contributions in the compilation of the reports of IPCC Intergovernmental Panel on climate change, 1992 - 1996 as convening lead author, and as expert reviewer up to 2014.
