PhD student in The Atmospheric Chemistry Group (led by: Prof. Thomas Peter) and The Atmospheric Physics Group (led by: Prof. Ulrike Lohmann)
PhD project: Lagrangian Measurements and Modeling of Cirrus clouds (LAMMOC) funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Education and Research (SER) within the framework of the European COST action Water Vapour in the Climate System (WaVaCS)
Keywords: cirrus clouds, ice supersaturation, box model, ice microphysics, geoengineering
Research
- Invastigation of the life cycle of cirrus clouds and the occurrence and evolution of ice supersaturation inside and around mid-latitude cirrus.
- Microphysical and micrometeorological studies on the time evolution of cirus clouds using a bulk microphysics scheme
implemented into a box model (Spichtinger and Gierens, 2009; Spichtinger and Cziczo, 2009) with differently sophisticated ice microphysics runs.
- Impact of geoengineering on cirrus clouds.
Project aims
- By use of the “Match” technique perform the first Lagrangian measurement of supersaturated regions inside and around cirrus clouds.
- By use of Lagrangian modelling investigate the life cycle of cirrus clouds.
- By use of cloud-resolving 2-D modelling investigate small-scale morphology of cirrus clouds and assess the representativeness of the Match measurements.
- Provide an overall assessment of in-cloud supersaturations and their persistence.
