• Heterogeneous nucleation of ice in mixed phase clouds, with focus on deposition nucleation and immersion freezing
• Nucleation theory, and the parameterization of ice nucleating aerosol surfaces in nucleation theory
• Development and improvement of instrumentation for laboratory-based investigation of heterogeneous ice nucleation

PhD project and current activities

IMCA picture

My PhD project basically consisted of developing a chamber that could extend the reach of our continuous-flow diffusion chamber (CFDC) ZINC towards measuring the freezing point of (artificial) cloud droplets with single immersed aerosol particles. The picture to the right shows a laboratory picture of the resulting IMCA (Immersion Mode Cooling ChAmber), standing on top of ZINC (not shown).

Current activities aim at improving the detection of frozen and unfrozen cloud droplets on a single-particle detection basis with the Ice Optical DEtector (IODE).
