This project aimed at improving our still limited understanding of interannual-to-decadal variability in stratospheric climate and ozone. This was accomplished using a chemistry-climate model (CCM) for simulations over 100 years with time-varying boundary conditions. The main original objectives of this thesis were:
• to perform the first ever transient ensemble simulations (nine members) over the 20th century with a state-of-the-art CCM
• to better understand the effect of El Niño/Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the northern high-latitude stratosphere
• to investigate the internal and forced component of interannual-to-decadal variability in the stratosphere
All of these goals could be successfully fulfilled within three years leading to a large number of publications (see reference section), international conference contributions and to collaborations with various research groups around the world.
