We use a historical case (the “year without summer” 1816) to study different notions of “climatic changes” and their relation to observed meteorological conditions, scientific explanations (including numerical modelling), non-scientific explanations, social processes, individual attitudes, and societal influences. The expected outcome is (1) a framework that can also be applied to analyze current debates (2) new insights into the causes underlying this event through compiling and re-assessing historical sources and observations and through modelling (3) and a framework and case study that can be used in teaching.
