Dear Collegues, I have a new job and no longer work at ETH. My new employer is MeteoSwiss (see contacts above). My task there is to create long term satellite data records for climate analysis and for validation of numerical weather and climate prediction systems.

NEW: Pheno Analysis, a sequential data assimilation framework for use with prognostic phenology models, has been released as Open Source software for free use on sourceforge.net!

The projects listed below will be discontinued during 2008 but support can be requested from me if needed.

My name is Reto Stöckli and I am a research scientist at the Department of Atmospheric Science (CSU Fort Collins, CO USA) and at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science (ETH Zurich, Switzerland). My aim is to better understand the coupled terrestrial water and carbon cycle in order to implement numerical representations of plant physiological and phenological processes in land surface models for global climate research. My strategy is to integrate ecosystem observations and satellite remote sensing datasets in land surface models like the Simple Biosphere Model (CSU/ETH), the Community Land Model (NCAR) and the Joint UK Land Environment Simulator (UK Metoffice) for a more realistic simulation of radiation, heat, water and carbon exchanges.

I am a member of NASA's Earth Observatory (Goddard Space Flight Center) and create visualizations from EOS satellite data for public outreach and earth science education. It is important to communicate earth science to a broad audience. Visual perception of the earth system dynamics through satellite imagery can foster interest in the public to further explore the underlying science. It will further create awareness of causes and effects of changes in the earth's climate system. Please also visit my contractor's website: Science Systems and Applications Inc.

While my science work puts Nature into a bunch of differential equations, my private interests peacefully follow rivers, mountains and forests, where I find time to enjoy nature and to do outdoor photography.
