I am part of the NASA Earth Observatory team and work as an external collaborator (NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Climate and Radiation Branch, Contractor: SSAI) from Zürich, Switzerland. My collaboration began in 1998 as a 5 month long internship at the Goddard Space Flight Center (Laboratory for Atmospheres, Dr. Fritz Hasler) and has been continuously extended over the past years. My current projects focus in the creation of high resolution global satellite data composite imagery, 3D animation of satellite launch and operations, and the visualization of NASA's Earth Observing System data for public outreach. Some of the past and current projects are listed here:

In Preparation: Global MODIS+SeaWIFS NPP visualization New satellite remote sensing instruments like NASA's MODIS or SeaWiFS are capable of monitoring the state of the global biosphere. The Net Primary Productivity (NPP) parameter in particular is of interest because it shows where and when plants on land and in the ocean perform photosynthesis and take up CO2 (carbon dioxide) from the atmosphere. |

A High Resolution Climate Model Visualization In collaboration with P.L. Vidale (NCAS, U. of Reading, UK) we have visualized a full year of the earth's climate simulated by the N216 (approx 60km grid space) Hadley Centre's NUGAM climate model. Amazing broadcast-ready movies, previews and publications are in preparation! |

Blue Marble (2000) Starting in 1998 we created a false-color composite of the western hemisphere at approximately 4km spatial resolution. The image is derived from GOES-8, POES AVHRR and SeaWiFS satellite sensor data and is available for free download. |
|
Blue Marble (2002) The availability of the new MODIS sensor from NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS) allowed to create a true color visualization of our planet. The high resolution imagery was created in 2002, and is available at 1km spatial resolution: land surface, ocean, clouds, city lights, topography, ocean bathymetry and land cover classification. |

Blue Marble Next Generation (2005) A new 500m monthly cloud-free true color global composite has been created from MODIS data. Discrete Fourier time-series are used to extract the seasonal variation from the cloud-contaminated satellite reflectances. A technical overview can be found here. |

European Heat Wave from MODIS Europe was experiencing a historic heat wave during the summer 2003. Our satellite image composite shows differences in day time land surface temperatures of 2003 to the ones collected in 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2004 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite. |

NASA's Earth Observatory Website I am processing EOS satellite data for the Earth Observatory website, images & data section. The task involves aquiring raw satellite parameters, compositing them in space and time and turning bits into colors. The resulting images are then available for free to the scientifically interested public on our website. |

AQUA launch and deploy animations The AQUA satellite successfully launched on 4 May 2002. I have created 3D animations of the satellite and its launch and deploy procedures. |
