Soil moisture is an important memory component in the coupled land-atmosphere system. Previously, the soil moisture reservoir characteristics (the "memory") have been derived mainly from sparse soil moisture observations through autocorrelation decay analysis. Teuling et al (2007) have proposed to derive the reservoir constant directly from observations of evapotranspiration during prolonged rainless periods. An overview of land surface response times can aid in land surface model parameterisation, calibration, and validation. This site aims to establish such an overview.

Contributing data

Scientists are invited to add their observations of long drydowns to the dataset. This can be done by sending an email to ryan.teuling@env.ethz.ch, containing the site name, lat/lon coordinates, vegetation type/land cover, reference to any papers, year, observations of daily ET [mm/d] and dates at which the observations were made.
